The Silver Palace of Garuda
The Discovery of Tibet’s Last Secret (Only available in German)

320 pages, Malik Publisher
April 2006, ISBN: 3890293069
Price: 24,90 EUR

While Tibetan Buddhism is said to have its roots in India alone, the adventurer and Asian expert Bruno Baumann proves the opposite. He managed to travel down the Sutley Canyon and penetrate to the roots of the ancient and highly civilized pre-Buddhist kingdom of Shang Shung.

Prologue (excerpt)

For hours we follow the winding of the Sutley River that forces us into a canyon becoming narrower and narrower. Both walls of the canyon come so close we can only see a tiny strip of the sky above us, sometimes covered by big white clouds one thinks is able to touch. Although the sun is high, the ground of the canyon, where we are, lies in freezing shade...

As we stepped out of the small canyon on the other side, we found ourselves standing on a natural terrace. Our view went into the void and found the ground of the canyon. Down there it boiled and bubbled, hot springs, and snow white sinter terraces go up like steps to the kingdom of gods in a deep blue sky. Our gaze settles on the other side of the canyon. And we stop breathing. What we see is more than we ever expected. The entire canyon wall, that comes down on the other side of the canyon towards the Sutley forms a natural amphitheatre. The walls are not even and regular, but form a gigantic palace of towers and merlons. The center is a kind of pillar reaching up from the side of the river into the steepest slope. Like bleached bones the ruins attach to it in all states of decay. The settlement is crowed by an overwhelming construction onto the rock. It differs from the rest of the canyon in color, silver shining conglomerates, covered with yellow stripes and artificial holes like a sieve. With its roof-like top and its caves which seem like windows, this palace as a whole seems like an impregnable fortress. Whoever the people were that had settled here would not have been able to find a better place anywhere in the world... More than ever, I am convinced that the key to pre-Buddhist history and culture lies here in the Garuda Valley...

At that place that forms the hub of the world the most powerful of mountains rises: the snowy mountain of Kailash in all its splendor. These are the words written in the "Crystal Mirror", one of the oldest Tibetan guides for pilgrims to the world's holiest mountain in West Tibet. The text was written more than one hundred years ago by a Lama of high rank and describes the holy places around the Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, the holy lake situated at the mountain's foot. For the first time now, the text is printed in German. Bruno Baumann takes the reader to the most important places and explains their importance with the help of the original text. His magnificent pictures taken during more than twenty trips to the Kailash convey the feeling of the special power of this mountain, the translucency and vastness of the landscape there.

  • An illustrated text book about the world’s holiest mountain
  • With original texts taken from the Tibetan "Crystal Mirror", with comments and explanations by Bruno Bauman, one of the best connoisseurs of Tibet
  • More than 100 magnificent color photos of all the holy places around the Kailash
  • Aniva repro and print techniques
